Prediabetes Screenings

Risk Assessment: Moderate

I will be using blood pressure cuffs and blood glucose monitors which require some simple training to know how to use properly. If used incorrectly, blood pressure cuffs can cut off circulation or even cause bruising. Blood glucose monitors contain a small needle which is used to prick patients’ finger. This needle must be changed between each patient to ensure that disease and bacteria are not spread. The needles must be disposed of in a sharps waste container.

Health screenings will take place on the following dates:

Documentation Plan:

During each clinic, I will take pictures to document the event. After each screening, I will update a spreadsheet with a description of service and the hours spent. I will also maintain a service journal with a more detailed description of each screening. At the end of the project, these photos, spreadsheet, and journal will be compiled into a digital portfolio.

Anticipated Obstacles:

Projects don’t always go exactly as planned. I understand that there are some things that may happen as explained above. For example, at the Cedar City location we might not have very many people that are staying at the shelter. I can speak to the manager at the Care & Share about my project and have him announce the event to tenants throughout the month. I am also prepared to put up a notice of the event for tenants to see beforehand. Other obstacles include people who do not want their finger pricked during the blood glucose test. I will explain that the screenings are completely optional and the finger prick is not necessary if not desired.

Differentiation:

I will stand out from others in my major by getting direct, hands-on experience working with the underserved in the community. Students in a Human Nutrition major learn about the warning signs for diabetes. I will be able to get real-life experience testing for diabetes risk factors. Compared to others in my major, I will be getting experience that directly relates to my future professional field.
